A proper Japanese martial arts stance, especially at any other arts, can say a lot about your style and your practice. In fact, it can be the biggest asset of your practice and teaching. With the right stance, a person is a proper self image of themselves. It is truly a tough job, but you can never be successful if you don’t.
The martial art stance has to consider most of the following concepts:
Depth: Using the right distance and position with your body.
Balance: Consider the horizontal plane of your stance and take care of proper alignment.
Weight distribution: Respect the center of your weight distribution.
Floor-touching: Shoulder width or more or less. The proper balance for it.
Angle: Shoulder width to thigh or vice-versa? How much?
Open or closed: How open is your stance?
How can you know how to stand up right? In this article, I am going to demonstrate how to stand up correctly and point out what stance to use. Each of them might sound simple, but the outcome might say a lot.
When first learning kendo, one of the main pieces of advice is to do not rush. It is essential to the flow of the kendo, especially in the beginning. Rushing through your movement can cause a “false attack” or it could even cause a false defense. Therefore, kendo is best learnt in a calm and careful way, by experience.
When a kendo practitioner first starts learning kendo, it is natural to rush, and to make things confusing. You don’t want to look wrong in front of your opponent, and your teacher might not be able to tell you how to improve. This is why kendo is best learnt in a calm way, by experience.
When doing stances with the people you train with, you should do some specific drills that will let your guard go up and develop a stronger kendo. It is hard to explain what should be done in this article, but when you are ready for it, I will be able to guide you to understand everything. Until then, my advice is to start by practicing kendo, doing kendo, and re-doing kendo.
